[Voiceover]: Water has shaped WA's story from the very beginning.
But climate change and our growing population are putting pressure on this valuable resource.
By 2035, we'll need up to 125 billion more litres of water each year. And a new water source to meet this growing demand.
Seawater desalination offers a climate independent source to protect our water future.
So, we’re acting now to secure drinking water for generations to come.
We’re building the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant.
This will be our third desalination plant servicing the Perth Metro area and surrounds, joining Kwinana and Binningup.
At completion of stage 1, the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant will deliver up to 50 billion litres of water annually.
Stage 2 will double that capacity.
This vital state asset is a major investment in securing our water future.
At Water Corporation, we respect our shared connection to nature.
We’ve taken care to minimise environmental impacts, protect culturally-significant sites, and reduce local traffic disruptions.
Together, we’re investing in projects that benefit communities, creating local jobs, preserving our heritage, and recognising the Whadjuk Noongar people.
Because desalination is energy intensive, we will be sourcing renewable energy for the plant.
To prepare for construction, the site was lowered into the natural landscape. Future infrastructure will be hidden from view behind large, vegetated sand dunes.
Specialised tunnel boring machines will construct two offshore pipelines under the seabed: one to bring seawater into the plant and a second to return brine to the ocean.
The plant is just one part of our investment in a sustainable water supply.
We’re constructing a pipeline to transfer water from the plant to Wanneroo Reservoir, and implementing upgrades across our water supply network throughout the greater Perth area, to safely deliver water to your home.
The Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant is just one of the many ways in which we are helping to secure WA’s water future - for generations to come.
