Pipe dream comes true for Jurien Bay leak detection business
Jurien Bay-based Statewide Leak Detect has been recognised for helping save precious drinking water in the Midwest and further afield at the 2024 Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association (MPGA) of WA Awards for Excellence.
The business claimed the newly created Excellence in Leak Detection award, which was sponsored by Water Corporation to recognise innovation in the detection and repair of hidden water leaks.
Among its recent work, Statewide Leak Detect teamed with Dongara business Midwest Solar and Water to locate and repair a hidden leak at a local lime plant, saving 65 litres of water each minute. This is in addition to its work in the North West, servicing regional towns such as Onslow to provide technical leak detection expertise.
Water Corporation Demand Delivery Manager Damien Postma said the award highlighted the importance of acting quickly to stop water loss.
“Unfortunately, there’s no way to prevent leaks and bursts entirely, but what’s really important is getting them repaired as soon as possible by your local Waterwise Plumber,” Mr Postma said.
“That goes for both homes and business. In WA more than anywhere else in Australia, our drinking water sources are feeling the impact of climate change. This means we can’t afford to take our eye off the ball when it comes to being waterwise.
“In Perth for example, around 19 billion litres of water is lost each year through residential leaks. Often, these leaks will be obvious like a dripping tap or leaking toilet, but they can also be hidden inside walls or in the garden.
“We’re fortunate to work with many excellent plumbing businesses who, like Statewide Leak Detect, do a fantastic job of saving precious drinking water.”
The Excellence in Leak Detection award was one of 12 categories at MPGA Awards for Excellence, announced during a gala presentation event on Friday, 7 March.
For more than 15 years, Water Corporation and MPGA have run the Waterwise Plumber Program, which equips plumbers with best-practice water efficiency knowledge. To find your local Waterwise Plumber, visit the online directory on Water Corporation’s website.
If you’ve had a hidden leak fixed or think you might have a leak, you may be eligible for an allowance of up to 50 per cent of the estimated water lost. For more information visit the Leak Allowance page of Water Corporation’s website.
