Aquatic centres in Northam and Perth have received special recognition for their commitment to water efficiency at the annual Aquatic Recreation Industry Awards held 30 June.

Northam Aquatic Facility, HBF Arena Joondalup and HBF Stadium in Mount Claremont joined 53 centres across the State endorsed under the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program.

A joint initiative between Water Corporation and Leisure Institute of Western Australia Aquatics, the program recognises aquatic centres state-wide that demonstrate significant and ongoing commitment to reducing water use.

Water Corporation Manager Customer and Community Karen Willis said the program played an important role in helping secure WA’s long-term water supply and contributes to improving sustainability across the industry.

“We’re thrilled to have Northam Aquatic Facility, HBF Arena Joondalup and HBF Stadium join 53 centres across the State committed to water efficiency,” Ms Willis said.

“As climate change continues to impact water supplies and our community continues to grow, it is important we work together to protect our most precious resource.

“Aquatic centres provide an important lifestyle amenity to communities across WA and through the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program we’re able to assist them to operate in a more sustainable way.

“Since 2008, waterwise programs supporting aquatic centres have helped save around 1.5 billion litres of water - that's enough to fill 671 Olympic swimming pools.”

The newly endorsed centres have made significant and ongoing commitments to using water wisely in their facilities, with measures such as automated taps and toilets, water efficient appliances, daily water use monitoring, leak detection programs and landscaped waterwise gardens.

Eight centres were also celebrated for participating in the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program for five years or more:

  • Aqualife Aquatic Centre – Town of Victoria Park
  • Fremantle Leisure Centre – City of Fremantle
  • Leisure World Gosnells – City of Gosnells
  • Mandurah Aquatic & Recreation Centre – City of Mandurah
