Water Corporation extends support to local not-for-profits through Kimberley Community Grants Scheme

Kimberley not-for-profit groups are being encouraged to apply for funding of up to $10,000 each under Round 7 of Water Corporation’s Kimberley Community Grants Scheme, which opens next week.  

Since 2016, the scheme has awarded more than $365,000 to 65 grassroots organisations for projects that make a positive difference to lives and communities across the region. 

“The Kimberley Community Grants Scheme is an opportunity for worthy organisations to kickstart projects which ultimately benefit entire communities,” said Water Corporation North West Regional Manager Sharon Broad. 

“In 2020 we received a record number of applications, which shows there is no shortage of projects across the Kimberley that simply need a helping hand to get started.” 

Among last year’s recipients was the Mamabulanjin Aboriginal Corporation, who used the grant to convert a sea container into an ablution block at its 200ha fruit farm near Broome. 

The new facilities will allow the Corporation to offer horticultural training to more young indigenous people and accelerate the planting of a Gubinge orchard – a native superfood known for its high Vitamin C content. 

The Kimberley Community Grants Scheme is delivered by Water Corporation alongside the Lions Club of Broome. It is funded through the sale of Rhodes grass hay produced at the Corporation’s Broome North Water Resource Recovery Facility.   

“The scheme is quite literally a grassroots initiative given that funding comes from the sale of Rhodes grass hay grown with recycled water,” Ms Broad said

“It’s one of the many ways Water Corporation aims to give back to the communities in which we live and work.”
