Water mains constructed more than a century ago in Fremantle will be replaced by the Water Corporation from August to October this year.

This essential work will start on 12 August on Bannister Street, between Pakenham Street and Market Street and Collie Street, between Marine Terrace and South Terrace.

Work will be carried out in stages and will then continue along Pakenham Street, South Terrace and Market Street.

Water Corporation spokesperson Clare Lugar said the work would be completed in short stages to help reduce the impact on the area, and had been timed to be finished before the busy summer trading period.

“Part of our ongoing commitment includes working closely with the City of Fremantle, Fremantle Chamber of Commerce and a dedicated community working group to ensure we’re reducing the impact on the community as much as possible,” Ms Lugar said.

While this work is essential, we understand there will be some impact on businesses, and we encourage people still to head to their favourite venues in Fremantle and support local traders.

“There will be traffic detours and we will ensure pedestrians have good footpath access to local businesses.

“Some of these water mains have been supplying water to homes and businesses in the area for over a century, but like anything that age we need to replace them to ensure they do their job for decades to come.”

The oldest water main to be replaced is along Collie Street, which was constructed in 1891, and is now 128 years old.

A Pipes for Fremantle Information Centre is open at 66 High Street, Fremantle. Members of the project team will be on hand to discuss the work in detail and answer any questions.

Water Corporation has been consulting local businesses since January on the project and also has support processes in place if a business experiences any financial loss as a result of the work.
