If your water meter cannot see the light of day, Water Corporation is asking you to add clearing around it to your to-do list.

Water Corporation Great Southern Regional Manager, Adrian Stewart, said more than 250,000 water meters were read by his team each year, but some were unable to be read due to obstructions.

“We read your water meter every two months and overgrown bushes, lawn and soil are the most common obstructions that can prevent us from taking a reading,” Mr Stewart said.

“Our team reads hundreds of water meters in a day, so ensuring your meter is unobstructed will make their jobs easier and safer.

“Water meters should have a clear space of at least 30 centimetres on each side and 120 centimetres above.”

While Water Corporation loves dogs, Mr Stewart explained they could be dangerous for meter readers.

“If there is a dog on your property that is not secured away from the meter area, our meter readers will not enter,” Mr Stewart said.

“We’ve also had instances where dogs are not secured behind gates and chase our meter readers - so it’s important gates are kept closed.”

If Water Corporation cannot read your meter, an estimated meter reading for that two-month period will be issued. Estimated water use is based on the 'average daily use' recorded for a property in the same reading period in the previous year. This is because it is reasonable to expect the property to use similar water use each season.
