Water Corporation and Shire of Laverton repurpose local water tank

Laverton’s iconic water tank will get a new lease on life, after the Water Corporation handed over its ownership to the Shire of Laverton.

Water Corporation Goldfields and Agricultural Regional Manager, Sharon Broad, said the tank was set to be decommissioned.

“The tank has served the Laverton community well for the past 40 years, and over that time it has become an icon in the town,” Mrs Broad said.

“The tank was due to be decommissioned and removed – when the Shire of Laverton asked whether it could be kept and used by the wider community.

“This was a win-win outcome for both Water Corporation and the Shire of Laverton and we are happy to say the Shire is now officially the proud owner of the iconic tank.”

The tank has sweeping views over the Laverton landscape and the Shire is planning to turn it into a tourist attraction for those travelling the popular Great Outback Way route connecting Laverton to Cairns via Uluru and Alice Springs.

Shire of Laverton CEO, Peter Naylor, said Council had identified the historical significance of the tank to the town of Laverton.

“We believe the refurbished site will provide a wonderful welcome to Laverton,” Mr Naylor said.

“Future plans include a picnic area at the base of the tank infrastructure, a high level viewing platform, and a mural or artwork on the tank by a local group.

“The site will give visitors a fantastic vantage point to appreciate the vast terrain of the Northern Goldfields.”
