Sunset over the Ord dam

Water Corporation will be lowering the water level of Lake Kununurra this wet season to complete important maintenance work to the irrigation scheme.

North West Regional Manager Sharon Broad said the work will take place following a significant rainfall event during the window between 29 January and late February 2026, and urged customers to prepare now for lower water levels.

“As soon as we have a suitable rain event within this timeframe, we’ll begin lowering Lake Kununurra to undertake essential works on the M1 Channel,” Ms Broad said.

“This flexible approach, which has worked well over the past few years, allows us to minimise disruption to customers and make the most of the natural replenishment provided by rainfall.

“People who are required to navigate the river during this period should consider the risks involved due to lower water levels.

“If you have pumping or other ancillary equipment near the river, please consider the risks and take preventative measures, such as moving this equipment in advance so that we can commence lowering of the lake as soon as practicable.

“We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the community during this time.”

Boat and barge owners have been advised they must remove their vessels from Lake Kununurra, Packsaddle and Crossing Falls in late January to avoid any damage.

Boats in Lilly Creek Lagoon can remain in the water provided they are secured as once the water recedes, they will sit on the riverbed.

It's expected lowering of the water levels will take place over two weeks, sometime between 29 January 2026 and the end of February.

“Unfortunately, we can’t give an exact date of when we will commence works, but when the rain comes, we will move quickly. If we don’t get a suitable rain event during that timeframe, the lowering will not take place,” Ms Broad said.
