Residents warned to prepare for cyclone season

Water Corporation is encouraging residents across the North and Mid West to take simple steps to prepare for cyclone season, including checking their homes and storing enough drinking water in case of severe weather.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a higher chance of tropical cyclones developing early in the season, driven by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures. While an average number of cyclones are forecast, those that do form are expected to be more intense.
Acting North West Regional Manager Ryan Lind said early preparation is key to reducing the impact of severe weather.
“We know how quickly conditions can change during cyclone season, and even one system can cause significant disruption,” Mr Lind said.
“We encourage residents to check their properties, prepare an emergency kit with essential items including drinking water, and have a plan in place so they know what to do if a cyclone warning is issued.”
“In the lead up to a cyclone, filling bathtubs and sinks with water is a simple way to ensure extra supply for hygiene needs, and turning off sprinkler systems helps preserve drinking water for essential use.”
Each person should have access to at least 20 litres of water per day, with 2.5 litres set aside for drinking.
If evacuation is required, water can be turned off at the stopcock near the water meter to isolate the property from the network.
Water Corporation continues to work closely with DFES to minimise service disruptions during emergencies.
