Our plans to secure drinking water supplies

Gascoyne

We've expanded groundwater sources for Exmouth and equipped the section of the borefield with solar power. This has increased the capacity of the borefield to produce an additional 500,000 litres of water each day. Source planning is currently underway to investigate seawater desalination and borefield expansion to meet future demand.  

Murchison

In recent years we've constructed water treatment plants in Mt Magnet, Sandstone, Cue and Meekatharra. The new plants have reduced the naturally high levels of salinity and nitrates in the water and improved scaling and hardness. The plants are all equipped with solar, battery, grid power, and diesel gensets. Work has commenced to redirect excess electricity produced by these solar arrays into the grid.

Improving our wastewater services

Upgrades of infiltration ponds at one of Geraldton’s wastewater treatment plants were completed to increase reliable plant operation and provide recycling opportunities. The chlorination system and treatment ponds in Carnarvon were upgraded to continue wastewater recycling in town. The project has doubled the capacity of the reuse scheme from 600kL/day to 1.2ML/day.

Reducing water use 

We continue to work with communities in various towns to change water use behaviours. This includes retrofitting inefficient appliances and fittings, and offering leak detection and repair services.

Increasing water recycling

Around 30% of all treated wastewater in the Mid West region is recycled. All of the treated wastewater from the Exmouth, Carnarvon, Kalbarri and Dongara is supplied to parks, gardens and ovals. in Geraldton, water is recycled for irrigating the golf course, cemetery, turf club and sporting grounds.
