What are food waste disposal units?

Food waste disposal units grind food waste into small particles that can be flushed to sewer. They are installed in the drain line under a kitchen sink. They are also known as food waste disposers or garbage grinders.

Can I install one on my kitchen sink?

No. Under the Water Services Regulations 2013, food waste disposal units must not be installed on any facility discharging to our wastewater system.

This is because food waste disposal units significantly increase the load on our wastewater treatment plants. Food waste is better disposed of via the solid waste disposal system, or by home composting.
