Smoke testing in Kununurra no cause for alarm

Water Corporation will carry out routine testing of Kununurra’s wastewater system, to improve protection from stormwater intrusion during wet seasons.

Beginning 12 June, testing involves injecting liquid white smoke into the wastewater system through access chambers (manholes). The smoke will travel through pipes and, if it escapes, show where stormwater can get into the system.

Residents may notice white smoke emanating from property gutters and air vents, however, Water Corporation North West Manager Sharon Broad said this was a normal part of the testing process.   

“This sort of work is very common, and residents shouldn’t be alarmed if they notice smoke coming from gutters and air vents,” Mrs Broad said.  

“The smoke is not dangerous, although it may irritate some respiratory conditions, so please take precautions if needed. 

“If you have any concerns, or notice smoke inside your home, please call us on 13 13 75. If you suspect smoke is coming from a fire, please immediately call triple-zero (000).” 

Residents can protect their homes from potential wastewater overflows caused by stormwater inundation by ensuring overflow relief gullies are clear of any obstructions.  

“An overflow relief gully is a drain-like fitting located outside the home, often near the bathroom or laundry area,” Mrs Broad said.   

“It acts to protect a property from internal flooding should blockage occur in the wastewater network.   

“Relief gullies may be inadvertently covered by landscaping, garden beds or other objects such as pot plants. The loose plastic grate fitted on top must be able to pop off easily, draining wastewater quickly away from your home without causing damage.”
