Centacare Kimberley will deliver free cooking classes over the next 10 weeks as part of a community education program to teach the community how to make healthy family meals on a budget.

Cooking-up Good Tucker is a community-led program made possible by a $7,700 contribution from the West Kimberley Community Grants scheme, a joint initiative by the Water Corporation and Lions Club Broome.

The West Kimberley Community Grants Scheme provides not-for-profit organisations and local schools with funding for local projects to will benefit communities in the West Kimberley. The funds are raised through the sale of Rhodes grass, grown using recycled water from the Water Corporation's Broome North Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Centacare Kimberley Chief Executive Officer, Michael King, said the classes will be delivered by Aboriginal Elders in Broome, who will teach families to use a combination of bush tucker and affordable foods to make healthy family meals.

“The program is designed to improve health outcomes and reduce chronic disease, but will also nurture social connections and strengthen cultural traditions,” Mr King said.

“Most of the participants are the main carers for their families so the program will benefit more than just those attending the classes.”

Water Corporation North West Regional Manager, Rino Trolio, said he was proud to support community-based projects like Cooking-up Good Tucker through the new grants scheme.

“Water Corporation is passionate about improving liveability for our communities and we are pleased to help local not-for-profit organisations,” Mr Trolio said.

“The next round of grants scheme funding will be announced in early-2017 and I encourage not-for-profit organisations and schools with  local projects that will benefit the community to apply.”

Cooking-up Good Tucker classes began last Tuesday and will continue over the next 10 weeks. To register, please contact Centacare Kimberley on (08) 9194 2640.
