Water Corporation is reminding residents in the Great Southern that even though there had been recent unseasonal rain, the sprinkler roster remains in place throughout autumn.

Residents across the entire Great Southern region, from Brookton in the north to Denmark in the south, are able to use their sprinklers either before 9am or after 6pm, two days per week.

Water Corporation Great Southern Acting Regional Manager Anthony Bodycoat said  while the recent rain was welcome, people still needed to be mindful of their water use.

“With 40 per cent of household water used outside the home, we encourage you to water your garden efficiently and check the settings on your irrigation controller to make sure it complies with the watering roster,” Mr Bodycoat said.

He also advised Water Corporation inspectors patrolled many towns in the Great Southern, and residents observed breaching the roster could be issued a $100 fine.

Mr Bodycoat said most people did the right thing when it came to abiding by the sprinkler roster, with Water Corporation research showing more than 90 per cent of Western Australians supported the two-day-a-week sprinkler roster and the winter sprinkler ban.

More information on the sprinkler roster, which is based on the last digit of your street number, is available at www.watercorporation.com.au/save-water/watering-days or by calling 13 13 85.

Fact file:

  • There were four warnings and six infringements issued across the Great Southern region this week. Four infringements were issued in Narrogin and one each in Boddington and Kulin.
  • Reducing sprinkler run times by two minutes each station can save a household around 480 litres of water each week.
  • Watering in the morning is best – water soaks into the roots and is available throughout the day.
  • Irrigation systems should be turned off in winter.
  • Choosing waterwise plants that are best suited for your region require less maintenance and water
